Captain Spang jumped up, brushing a Seven of Twigs from his forehead. Then he pushed his way forward. ‘I dinnae believe it!’ he cried. ‘It’s – it’s Aboat Time!’

‘About time for what?’ said Jack.

‘No! Aboat Time. My old ship. One of the first ones I ever sank!’ he cried, pressing his nose up against the viewport. He had a nostalgic look in his eyes.

‘You sailed that?’ said Leonora, staring at the forlorn wreckage.

‘Aye, she was a beauty! Took her on some real adventures … until we had to be rescued when it sank. I think the Bavarian Navy came for us that time,’ he said, stroking his beard.

‘O-kaaay … so if we’re near your old sailing routes, can you help navigate?’ asked Jack.

Leonora frowned. On the one hand, Captain Spang had helped them locate Mavenbridge on their last adventure, but, on the other, she also recalled several near-death sailing experiences with him at the helm of his ferry. He could probably even get lost trying to exit his own cardigan … But she shook those doubts away. Right now, she needed all the help she could get. ‘Thanks, Captain Spang,’ she said. ‘That would be great.’

Just then, Twitchy started pawing at her feet. He was letting out a complicated series of neeps and staring up at her with determination. His whiskers were vibrating at several times their normal speed.
